my 93 civic shuts off while driving

Asked by tosammy Jul 23, 2012 at 11:46 PM about the 1993 Honda Civic DX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

This is a new problem with my civic, it shuts off when it gets warm. It starts from cold without a problem then I drive it 8-10 miles and it shuts off. Gas tank is half full and the car start back up after 30 minutes of letting it to cool off. The check engine light comes on after driving 3-4 miles and stays on until the engine is shut off. Please help

I'll bet it's your coil. My 98 Civic was acting sluggish and then just quit after stopping at stop sign. The coil was bad. 5 minute fix. Coils are under $60 at Advanced Auto and you can ask them for a discount via the chat box (I always do and can get up to 30% off sometimes if I really finagle them). It's a 5 min fix if you are handy. There is also a YouTube how to video on how to change this. The coil code may not come up though so don't be discouraged. My Civic had BOTH Battery and Oil light come on at the same time when she died.....not the engine light.

I did have a Cavalier 1980's model that would just cut out when it got warmed up. After a zillion trips to the mechanics and only when the part failed it turned out to be the coil. Probably the same problem you have as my car would run okay when it cooled down.

Finally found the problem and solution. I had a 1995 honda civic del sol It would start perfectly but after varying minutes it would shut off then have to wait a few minutes then restart . After replacing a few things and about to order a ECM I took it apart and seen one solder point suspect I also heated my oven to 150 degrees then turn the oven off and placed the control module inside my theory was that area had gotten a lot of moisture on the passenger floor board.and maybe heating it would remove any hidden moisture. its working now perfectly whether the heat or me or resoldering that one pin on the motherboard its working
