This comment concerns a 1999 Explorer with the same problem. A new cylinder and keys can be purchased from a place like autozone, as long at the new cylinder and matching keys are programmable. Replacing the cylinder takes about two minutes. A locksmith will have to do the programming. It takes a couple of minutes. Or you can opt for a dealership and pay a lot more.
