03 accent 1.6L Engine problem

Asked by jayroblee Sep 10, 2011 at 10:01 AM about the 2003 Hyundai Accent GL 2-Door Hatchback FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

hey guys.. just bought this car yesterday for 1000$ 03 accent with 62000 kms .. thought ive gotten a real good deal here.. BUT! realized as driving it home the engine had little to no power, engine light flashing, and very rough idle... it seems like a missfire while idleing, but when i step on it it eventually gets up to speed. and its a 5spd.. im yet to check anything yet as my tools are not near here. ive read countless posts regarding this cars idleing issues. i will scan the neighbourhood for some tools i can borrow lol... i really hope i didnt buy a lemon... was just hoping id struck it big with this purchase! its a really nice car! im just asking if there is maybe someone who has the same issues and see how they went about fixing it.

I'd suspect one of the following; coils, wires, possibly an intake gasket

If your ENGINE LIGHT is flashing you need to find out what is at fault. Your car has a multi-pin plug inside somewhere that can be accessed with a tester. Most good mechanics have one. The error code(s) will tell you what is at fault. Faulty sensors around the engine will make it run rough, misfire, use more fuel. You can force the ENGINE LIGHT to flash out the code numbers by bridging two ports on the test plug with a paper clip. You can then look up the codes on the web. Then you can identify and replace the offending sensor(s).

most auto parts stores can scan the vehicle for you for free.more then likely with that mileage your looking at a set of plug wires and spark plugs.the brand of wires arent that important but stick with ngk plugs for this vehicle. it doesnt really like anything else and youll wind up with the same problem in a few months.check the wires for visible arc marks inside and outside the wire boot(they will look like lightning bolts or white spots on the wire boots). if no obvious marks pull the plugs out and see if they are fouled but since you said the light is flashing this is not very likely.if you still havent found anything obviouspour a little water around the coilpack with the car running and look for arcing around the coil.. simple fix just a little tough to find the cause.

Not coils, plugs or wires on mine. Even replaced o2 sensor under car. Dealer replaced plugs claiming that platinum plugs not good for this model. Still has rough idle when warms up. Fuel lines replaced last year because of rust and deterioration. Runs fine on first start up and it's cold. Even emptied out charcoal canister which plugs the evap lines and didn't solve it. Running out of money and patience with this one. When warm idle flucuates occasionally ,sort of a stumble, then goes back to normal. Idle sits steady at 600rpm when its not bouncing up and down. Funny thing is when its on highway at 2500+ rpm it runs fine. Anyone have a clue.
