Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a 2000 Ford Explorer. The OD light flashing,
doesn’t do it all the time. It takes moods. The
transmission shifts great except for a clunking
sound when it down shifts when you get ready to
come to a stop. Question being the transmission is
over filled with fluid could this cause the problem?
Always heard you were not supposed to over fill!

OD light flashing indicates a problem with the transmission. The problem could be a transmission mechanical, hydraulic or electrical in nature. Overfilling can cause the fluid to foam and foam in the fluid can cause all kinds of symptoms. Explorers have had transmission issues over the years. Is the fluid still a red pinkish color or is it brown? If it is not red and pinkish it should be changed.
Start by flushing, replace trans filter, then refill...
Took it to a local place that changes oil and flushes transmissions and new fluid and filter! Had a diagnostic reading done on it! No codes showed up for flashing OD light. Any more suggestions? Will have it flushed and new fluid and filter. See if that helps.
Had transmission flushed, new filter and fluid. Fixed the problems. O/D light no longer flashing.
Mi 2005 Ford Explorer had the same clinking noise and within 10 miles the car started not wanting to change gears, it’s an automatic. Once I got to the shop, the tool the engine oil out, it looked like coffee. The transmission Case seem a to have been damaged. It will cost too much to fix it.
Todd where did you go to get your transmission fluid changed and etc? Mine started lately doing this too
