possible Cause of overdrive light flashing? on 2000 Ford Explorer.

I have a 2000 Ford Explorer XLT, 4 Wheel drive, 4.0.the over drive light
seems to come on when it wants too. can drive it a 100 miles sometimes
before it starts flashing some times less.it has 204 .thousand miles on it. the
over drive button still works on the gear shift and the transmission still shifts
great.shifts a little hard down shiffting from 3rd into 2nd or 2nd into 1st. when
overdrive light flashing. took it to a mom and pops oil change center that
read codes and nothing showed up on their tester. any suggestions as to
what could be wrong? thanks.

Try a transmission shop to read the codes that the flashing light is warning you about.

Same problem with my 4.0 explorer concerning the OD light. When the light is illuminated, go to a tranny shop and have them read code, do not turn off the engine as the light may not come back on when the vehicle is started. My problem was a simple sensor which was changed in minutes.
