Long Delay Between Pressing Pedal And Acceleration

So all of a sudden when I press my gas pedal there is a good 1-2 second
delay to when my car registers and accelerates. This happened when I was
at a red light so it was not a gradual change over time. Just one second it
responded and the next it was very slow. I need to know if this could be a
problem I can drive to the shop and have fixed or if any additional road time
could do permanent damage so i need it towed? And is this something I
could potential fix myself or should i have a professional go over it?

Thanks! I just went out and started the vehicle again and the problem was gone. But I don't want to have this happen again so I'll have someone look everything over again and hopefully that'll be the end of it. I did smell the catalytic converter a few times a few months ago but that would be a persistent issue if that got blocked up right? This car is a bit old and has over 125k miles so i don't want to undertake an expensive job like that if i can squeeze another year or two out of it.
