2002 Hyundai Sonata - Do I have to replace the WHOLE fuel pump assembly or can I just buy the pump and replace it?

My wife 2002 Hyundai Sonata quit on her on the freeway. The car turns over but seems like its not getting fuel. I had my mechanic friend have a look and he said its probably fuel pump. I'm going to attempt to replace the fuel pump. Do I have to replace the WHOLE fuel pump assembly or can I just buy the pump and replace it?

I am attempting to replace the pump myself...I do hear it turn on when I turn the key, does this means that the fuel pump is fine and that it maybe be something else?

I have a 2005 Sonata v6 2.7 L. When I had issues with my purge valve, it didn't want to start after each refuling. I'd have to keep it idling high & take off. Then it ran fine till next fuel up. Only cost $42 to resolve that issue. But when the timing belt broke, it died while driving, and would not restart. My brother who is a 18 wheeler mechanic, mentioned it could be a fuel pump problem. But it was the timing belt. I guess both issues can give you the same symptoms. I am 95% sure I have major engine damage, because my motor is suppose to be considered an Interference Engine. The original question, I see was posted 6 years ago. I wonder what his problem ended up being?
