Automatic transmission problem
Asked by edgaleyjr Dec 25, 2012 at 07:22 PM about the 2002 Hyundai Sonata V6 GLS FWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My automatic transmission will jerk, the check engine light will come on, I lose 1st and 4th gear. If I turn
off the car, and restart it, the check engine will stay on, but I regain 1st and 4th gear. It only does this
occasionally, and I am wondering if it is something electronic that is the problem, or something
mechanical causing this.

I would start with the electrical. Clean and tighten the battery connections. Read the voltage of the battery with the engine running. It should be around 13.5-14.5 volts. Get the codes read and find out why the check engine light is coming on.
Same problem Hyundai fixed in 30 min , it was a sensor they wouldn't say which one (warranty) same problem though as you.
Had similar problem with my 2002 base model, replaced input and output transmission sensors.Resolved issue.
My friend has a similar problem on a Hyundai Sonata. The dealer check it out and said it is working normally because the car did not act up during the rest drive. There is a good article online titled Troubleshooting Hyundai Transmission posted on YOUCANIC, it goes over the common problems with these cars. Worth checking out.
How do I know if my transmission fluid is low or to know if my transmission is going out on my Hyundai sonata
My 2011, went into Drive hard and would skip 1st gear.I disconnected the battery ,and reconnected the terminals. It fixed the problem
