What benifit is there to adding a 2nd battery to my grand wagoneer?

I am told that adding a 2nd battery to my 1988 grand wagoneer will help.  I do not understand how the G.W. performance will benefit.  Is there an explanation?

Only if you have accessories that use a lot of power like a winch.
