transaxle wont shift out of first

i just got a 1997 elantra for cheap cuz the automatic transaxle will only go in first.  reverse doesn't work either. drop it in low and go, it goes but  doesnt shift..   i removed the aircleaner to check out the linkage it all looks good (like i would know!!)  but when thew key is on and the shifter is in a gear then i hear a rapidfire clicking or ticking noise not too loud but loud enough to hear clearly.  i was told that it was a solenoid which seems to make sense.  maybe a solenoid clicking but never engaging.  maybe a sensor of some sort.    to make it clear the shifter  works fine.  the tranny doesnt respond correctly to the shifter is the problem    please i need help i am poor i have to figure things out for myself i cant afford professional help.

Dear imdlefty-- I would think that the person who sold you the 1997 Hyundai Elantra cheaply would have examined all options himself before he surrendered to the sale. The first thing I would do, and sorry, it might cost you a few bucks, is to have a transmission shop look at it. Hopefully they will find that your problem can be corrected by a computer update (and I have seen many of the worst sounding transmission problems cured this way.) If that is not the case, you can go on and try fixing it yourself (not easy.)
