Rain Water Leak

Asked by AHJ8448 Jan 23, 2019 at 12:01 PM about the 2012 Mazda MAZDA3 GS

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2012 Mazda 3. Recently it got hit on the rear bumper and I had a
local body shop replace the bumper. After that, there happened puddle of
water at the spare tire pocket in the trunk and on the rear floor as well, and
the whole back seat was heavily wet. I asked them to take care of the
problem and they found two reasons for the leak. One was that they didn't
seal properly when putting the taillights back while replacing the rear
bumper, and the other was a pinhole leak at the bottom of door from the
faulty polyshield, which was already present  before their bumper repair.
Now, they are blaming the pinhole leak at the door for the significant amount
of water on the floor and soaked back seat. Luckily I didn't have anything
damaged by the puddle of water on the floor or by the wet seat. I think it is
obvious that the leaky seal at the tail lights let the rain water into the trunk
and down to rear floor. They never accept their mistake even though I never
claimed anything against them. They are just like that. BTW, could they be
right? If they are right, how come I had never seen any water on the rear
floor before the bump repair was done? I am really curious.

Thank you, Ed92926. Mine is not a hatchback, but, still, the tail light seal is to blame, I think.

Hello there, I had this problem with my 2008 Mazda 3 and it was driving me crazy as well but I finally figured it out (Literally...I was going nuts but this was such a simple fix...I just wasn't desperate enough). I had a sedan so if you have a hatchback, it still might be applicable but i opened the trunk, and cleared everything out (this was the desperate part!!) and took out the tire and removed EVERYTHING till you get to the metal bottom. There you will find two rubber round seals inlaid in the bottom that can be pulled out. You might even find even more water in the bottom of your trunk but don't worry because the satisfaction of solving this problem and having a dry trunk makes up for it. After you remove the seals or maybe it is just the one seal that is leaking, dry the whole bottom out with some towels really well, and make sure if the edge is rough to lightly smooth it off with some sandpaper. Now I am from Canada, so at our "Canadian Tire" they have a $20 product, called Flex Seal, a.k.a. "Liquid Rubber" which is like spraying a rubber coating (I include the picture of the product...get the red and black can). Before you spray, put the rubber seals back into the holes (don't worry if they seem a little loose). Also, make sure you do this outside because there will be an initial strong smell, but it will go away eventually. After the round rubber seals are back in, lightly spray the whole metal bottom with the Flex Seal product even covering the seals in place. Let it dry and if you want, do it again and dry once more leaving the trunk open wide and in the sun. Put everything back in the trunk as you found it and trust me....say good by to the mysterious wet trunk. Trust me... Miles S. White

Miles_321: I don't know if you're still there, but your response spared me *HOURS* of fruitless searching in other places to fix this exact problem! I'm sorry that you had to go through such a hassle finding the leak, but thank you for sharing with the rest of us! You are a life saver!!!
