Loud knocking noise

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My tahoe has a bad knocking noise when it
runs & even when I turn the key on we've
changed the oil, spark plugs it dosen't seem
to be overheating or anything I been told it
could lifters or something with the oil pan
I'm not familiar with any of that I stopped
driving it because of the knocking. Could
more damage be done if I decide to drive it
or should I just leave it until we find out
where the noise is coming from??

A knocking noise is not good. Usually a rod knock indicating worn bearings on the crankshaft and push rods that drive the pistons. You definitely would cause more damage to the engine, be stranded somewhere when the engine throws a rod. So do not be driving it. The motor needs to be rebuilt or replaced.

My Tahoe did this, and EVERYBODY AND THEIR BROTHERS said I needed to replace/repair engine!! It ran too good for that. It turned out a heat shield was loose, and made a racket like a rod knockin...Had even one mechanic that said he felt the #7... All you do is take them loose, from the exhaust close to engine, and probably one piece at a time. Do this while the engine is cold. Overnight cold.

chip Kemp what you're saying sound like my situation. I notice a suction noise and ticking from the manifold area when driving and it does not tap while sitting idling the motor is still strong spunky with great oil pressure if I change the oil at 3,000 -3,500 it burns no oil in between. I had plan on taking it in to get the manifold gasket replace but needed to figure out if i had motor issues first now that i have some insight on it i'll get the manifold and heat shield replaced or repaired Thanks for the Info.
