Neutral Safety Switch

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1988 Chevy C2500: truck wouldn't start randomly,
so I replaced the neutral safety switch (standard
transmission) and the truck started once. Now the
truck will only start on jumpers if you pump the
clutch repeatedly while turning the key over. Bad
switch? Electrical gremlin? Anyone else experience
this?

The std. transmission doesn't have a neutral safety switch it has a clutch switch mounted on the clutch pedal bracket. The switch mounted on the column is the back up light switch. Did you change the right switch? The starter should only crank with the clutch pushed down. I hope this helps, take care.

Thanks Mike. Yes, it was the right switch, I must have had a brain fart with the name. I replaced that switch again in case the one I installed was faulty... the truck still isn't starting. It clicks once when I turn the key over, if i hook the truck to a booster or cables it'll start if I rock the key a couple times... I'm starting to think there's a drain on the battery and the ignition is bad... am I on the right track, or is there something I'm not seeing?
