An air pump, also commonly referred to as a smog pump, is an emissions component that is part of the secondary air injection system. It is responsible for pumping clean air into the vehicle's exhaust stream to complete burn before the fumes exit the tailpipe. Removing the air pump will not badly damage the car but can hurt performance/mileage. If your state requires smog inspection, then you will not pass it without the air pump.

I used the " " to denote something out of the ordinary, I apologize if there was any misinterpretation. The picture shows a very nice classic, no " " added. When I started with the Sheriff Office, the first vehicle assigned to me was a 1985 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, drove it for three years and never failed on me. By the way, I also own a "classic", a 1957 Ford Fairlane with 41,000 original miles.
