Is there an alternative motor for the 454 big block 7.4 in an 88' Silverado K3500 that may save on gas?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have an old 88' Silverado K3500 work horse, any suggestions on a new
engine/motor to keep some of the same torque/power but maybe save a little
on petro?? Is that even an option?!

Sure, install a 350/383 or a smaller big block like a 396/402. With a careful engine build you could exceed the torque/power of the smogged to death 454.

More work would be to install an engine from a late model truck that is injected and built for power and efficiency like the 6.0 liter L96 Vortec. http://gmauthority.com/blog/gm/gm-engines/l96/
