When I back up and turn the wheel to fast it will clunk grind or lock I always make mental note to turn slow sometimes it just happens.  Its a known problem GM wont admit is there a fix I heard a shim not sure also heard adjustment afraid to do anything without accurate information Any suggestions?

It sounds like you just need a new gear box. I doubt gm is worried about admitting anything on a 19 year old truck.
