Swapping Chevy engines

Asked by Brandon Feb 19, 2017 at 05:51 PM about the 1996 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Silverado Extended Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 95 Chevy k1500 Silverado 4x4. I'm buying
a 96 same style but want to put the motor from the
95 in the 96 because the 96's motor has a bad rod
knock. Will this work? Do I need to do anything
special for this?

No it will not work. The '95 engine is a TBI set-up and controlled by an OBD1 computer. The '96 is a MPFI Vortec engine and is controlled by a OBDII computer. And you cannot put the heads and intake off of the Vortec onto the '95 block UNLESS you luck out and the block you have in the '95 is a Vortec block. You would have to pull the intake off, then you could tell. I say this because my '95 5.7L had the Vortec block in it with a TBI set up on it.

I'm not sure if the one in my 95 is a vortec or not. I do know the 96 is. I'll have to find this out. Thank you, I appreciate the prompt answer!

Your '95 is not considered a Vortec. I am just saying it might have a the Vortec block but you wouldn't know until you took the intake off of it. 1996 is when the 5.7L Vortec first cam out. 1995 was the last year for the TBI. I know this stuff because I built a 1997 Vortec engine for my 1995 truck. Its modified to work tho. Check out my garage.
