will a bad fuel guage on a 1993 k1500 pickup 5.7 liter cause inability to fill up gas tank

Asked by tjc16 Jul 19, 2016 at 11:12 AM about the 1993 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Cheyenne Extended Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My fuel gauge shows tank is past full even though it is less than  1/2 full, but now is will only take enough gas to fill the intake hose of the tank before it shuts off the pump when trying to fill it up?

May be 2 separate problems, the float on your fuel level sending unit may be nearly gone, or the switch is getting erratic. The EVAP system may be plugged up, causing the pump nozzle to shut off. A lot of older cars develop that problem.
