I have a 89 Chevy Cheyenne 4.3L. Auto 2wd. No 4 speed

Asked by Guru9P6JG Jul 15, 2017 at 02:04 PM about the 1989 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Cheyenne LB RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I put the truck in OD or D the tranny
goes through 1st, and 2nd then slips into
nuetral every time. When I put it in 2nd but
not 1st I get 3 speeds. Can anyone tell me
the problem,? I just bought the truck and got
screwed completely (long story) Anyway, I
checked the fluid and it was down 3 quarts. I
filled it and also added Lucas tranny  fix. At
the rear of the tranny there is a plug with two
wires and when I unplug it it is loaded with
tranny fluid. Is this normal? Anyway I know
I'm screwed and probably need a tranny, but
was hoping someone might have an easy
solution?

Sounds like the trans is toast, common failure is the 3-4 clutches and they give symptoms you are describing.
