How long should it take for the battery to recharge when the engine runs after it has gone dead from leaving an interior light on?

Alternators are not designed to recharge a severely discharged battery. They are designed to maintain the battery charge. The alternator can be damaged. (expensive) At the end of the day place the battery on a charger overnight. Newer chargers will automatically turn off when the battery reaches its peak charge.
