Hi. Im trying to figure out what is wrong with my grandmas Isuzu axiom, I think there is something wrong with the tranny.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When driving it drives just fine except when it gets ready to go into 3rd gear.
The car hits 3000 rpm then it just revs up to 5500 rpm and then engages into
3rd gear. What could it be? Could it be 3rd gear going out?

A car that old probably missed several of it's 30K mile transmission service intervals. Maybe if you have the fluid and filter changed you can get it to run right as the clutch packs aren't closing smoothly or at all. It's especially noticeable in the higher gears when it demands more torque from the tranny. Start by checking the fluid level per instructions on the dipstick or owners manual...idling in "park" maybe.

There is no dipstick on this transmission. Must be checked from below and filled from below by removing one of two drain plugs. The upper one is for filling and checking
