Aside from proper fluid condition and level it may be a solenoid or other module that can be replaced without dropping the tranny .Finding a competent shop may be difficult . It's old and 4 wheel drive so any major service like tranny replacement would include service to transfer case , axles , bearings etc. $$$ . That's what I think

That sounds like the transmission is slipping, now it could be a pressure problem, plugged filter, leaking shift solenoids or the transmission is just getting tires and needs overhauled. Best thing it do is take it to a good transmission shop so they can do a stand alone testing, that will determine what the actual problem is. Just be aware that if it is a transmission it won’t be cheap.

I would start cheap and have fluid and filter done, probably factory filter and fluid. A plugged filter is a similar symptom as low fluid, pretty sure the fluid has to be checked from under truck on level ground. No external dip stick.
