Did you have the codes read?

I have a 2018 SE that did this as well. I also lost the ability to use my cruise control and the steering seemed squirrely. The next day it didn't appear. The day after that it came back on. The day after that is was on and a mile from the dealer and it behaves itself. Dealer can't find any codes and it won't do it again. I did take a video and pics as proof. I'd really like to have my vehicle back and fixed, but can't until it decides to do this again. If someone could please help, that'd be great!

I’m having the same problem, have had the vehicle in for repairs spending 3 nights in a hotel. After driving away from the dealer the problem returned within 10kilometers of driving. We are currently waiting on a call about what the next step is the alarm is currently of but comes and goes remaining on for days a t a time.
AWD and check engine could possibly be fuel cap not closed tight. For the other electrical issues I notice that if you hook up a battery charger to the USB it will disrupt the electrical system.

I have a 2016 Highlander and mine did the same thing. The next night before I was going to take it in to be serviced. It went out and never had the problem again.
Same problem: 2018 Highlander, over 30K miles. The Check engine, Check AWD and Visit Dealer messages all cycled a few times over several weeks. Dealer1 said messages need to be active to diagnose. Close by Dealer2 when reoccurred, so stopped while still active. Dealer2 said Chk Eng light always leaves history (??). Toyota covered partial engine rebuild and drive axle replacement/repair and rental car under 60 month Power Train warranty (very courteous - no hassle or haggling).
Toyota Highlander is garbage . I hate it . Too much problems , check engine AWD and fuel injector . My Highlander is 2017
2017 Toyota Highlander 36000 miles when starting Check Engine Visit Your Dealer also Check AWD System. Called Sunrise Toyota North on Long Island spoke to John said check gas cap it was tight made an appointment for tomorrow. Will post with follow up after appointment going on road trip from NY to Fla hope this won’t delay.
So here’s the update on 2017 Toyota Highlander with 36000 miles with Check engine and visit dealer also Check AWD System. Took in for diagnostic of code and turns out that they said I had gotten some contaminated gas. I got my gas from Costco so I don’t know. They recommend a fuel injection cleaning for a couple of hundred dollars. While I was there had oil change had a 49.00 dollar synthetic oil coupon. Total bill for diagnostic and oil change was $181.00 dollars. Passed on fuel injection cleaning went to Advanced auto bought a bottle of ISO heat + injection cleaner under $5.00 and was told will read code errors for free if they come on again. Lesson learned don’t rush to dealer when light says visit dealer find local part store or garage and have code read there. I will update if problem comes back if no update $5.00 bottle of ISo-beet did the trick.
I read the comment saying “fuel cap not tight”. I walked into my garage and found that’s exactly what the issue was. My check engine and check AWD lights were both on. I disconnected the battery for a couple hours and the dash is back to normal.
I read this yesterday, these notices were activated, I checked the engine and the traction system in my highlander 2017, today I went to the dealership and they told me that it is the contaminated gasoline and I told them why after having my car 3 years with me putting the same premium gasoline, why now results in that problem? that has to do with gasoline, with the awd system I think that is a problem with the transmission
the other problem is that one day before that appeared, I began to feel a blow to the transmission when I start to slow down 40 miles of my car or that is not normal and then the next day turns on all these alerts, plus the toyota He sent me a call saying that my car could present these problems and that they are having this problem with UA80 transmissions
have the same problem called Toyota they said that it could be the gas cap not being tight and since the tank was low on gas - air could have entered the system and it will take 1-2 days before the air clears and the warning lights turn off. Note that the CEL is not flashing and per Toyota that is good thing indicating nothing serious.
Mass airflow sensor $110.00 part, I sprayed with $6.00 can of mass air flow cleaner from Walmart reset the code and seems to be working for now. Two little holes on top sprayed in there only openings it had. engine seems to be running smoother. Also ran about four tanks of shell top grade gas suppose to clean fuel injectors, get your codes read for free at Autozone auto part dealers charge $120.00

2019 Toyota Highlander 33000 miles when starting Check Engine Visit Your Dealer also Check AWD System. Turned out to the gas cap wasn't on. Before you pay $100 diagnostics fee check that.

I want to thank the person that gave the tip about the gas cap! I went and checked and sure enough it wasn't on tight. However the light remained on so I called the dealership to inquire further- I was told that it will remain on for 50-100 miles until it can retest itself (or something like that, haha don't hold me to the technical verbiage). If after driving 100 miles it's still on, bring it in, they can check to make sure it's nothing else and clear it for me. I asked if there was concern it'd be something serious that I couldn't drive it safely for 100 miles and was told if the check engine light is just 'on' then it's probably the gas cap, BUT if the light is flashing, then it's something else. Hope this helps!

I have a 2016 Highlander Limited. I got the check engine light and 'AWD not working' message after I had to jump start it from a dead battery. I took it to Auto Zone and used their diagnostic tool....and the warning light reset itself. I'll keep an eye on it just in case if happens again but I think it's good for now. I put in some injector cleaner for good measure.

I followed the simplest suggestion in the thread, I opened and put back gas cap, it fixed the problem. Thanks
Following a discharged battery I had the same symptoms on my 2017 Highlander - Check Engine light, Visit dealer, Check AWD System repeating on dash all the way home for 30 minutes. At home Turned the car off, disconnected the positive on the battery, waited 60 seconds and reconnected. Problem cleared. System must have rebooted.

2016 Highlander with 112,330 miles had the cruise set at 80mph running fine all of a sudden cruise disconnected, check engine light came and trac control off...When i got home i shut the car down and restarted and had no power to the track control or cruise buttton chk eng light still on..Car had about1/4 tank of gas removed and replaced gas cap the disconnected battery and reconnected. Everything back to normal...I'm not sure if it was a gas cap issue of disconnecting/reconnecting the battery that corrected it?
2018 Highlander LE AWD. alert after gas refilling. Tighten the gas cup and cut off battery negative wire for 2 minutes. Everything goes to normal so easy.

after reading all the answers [thanks for all the suggestions] i put a bottle of fuel injector cleaner i bought at a sunoco station and filled the tank 3/4 with high test i rode around for 45 minutes came home and disconnected my batteries waited 20 minutes reconnectied the battery and the code was gone drove a couple of miles to test it and it is fine thanks for all the input

I am finding that disconnecting the battery is sufficient to eliminate the AWD warning with check engine light on. In my case the warning came on immediately from a cold start without any motion of the vehicle. This is the second time in 6000 miles on a 2016 with 35,000 miles on it.
Did anyone have codes for this? My 2018 is doing the same thing, had the codes read by a mechanic and would like to compare them to others
That is your vapor canister purge valve that is bad
Guru9G8C2B answered about a year ago
we just experienced this same issue on a 2019 XLE highlander with codes P0174 and P0171 we go the low brake power at one point too. we replaced battery and it was ok for a couple days and now its back on we replaced pcv and ok for another 2 days and now on again we will take to dealer tomorrow but thinking its the purge valve like stated on this and other threads

I would recommend filing report with NHTSA.gov to issue recall on this issue and get refunded

2015 Toyota Highlander: I had to jump battery, light was left on. I got the same "Check AWD System" and engine light came on. I checked the fuel cap and disconnected battery for 60 seconds, reconnected the battery and it's all better now.
Anyone have those issues AND an engine oil consumption problem? Oil has to be added monthly and will go down past the 1st circle on dip stick, no error codes come up has had engine, leak and exhaust testing and found no issues. 2017 Toyota highlander
My AFS system is not going off from the dashboard
Anyone have codes? I've had the "Check AWD" come on twice for my 2018 Highlander. First time with P0352 and P160500 (moved ignition coil to see if code would follow the coil, but code never came back). Now "Check AWD" came up again and I thought I'd have my answer on the coil. But when I pulled the code it was P012800 (low coolant temperature)! I'm thinking the "check AWD" is just a generic message that appears any time a diag code is present -- but trying to confirm if this is true.
Thank you so much for a cap hint. I set my mileage to track 50 miles, after open and close the gac cap. Yoday no annoying check engine or check AWD. Make my day I almost being out the door for going to the repair shop.
