Question type: Maintenance & Repair

What is the purpose for the small pan in front of the trans pan. Can I fix a leak
coming from the pan and trans body

The smaller pan contains the overdrive gear which converted the original 3 speed transmission to a 4 speed. I had a leak on mine as well and after replacing the gasket realized the leak was actually coming from the accumulator cup above the gasket. Try spraying some degreaser to dry everything up then start the engine and watch where the leak is coming from.

The accumulator cup is located above the forward drive shaft on the left side of the transmission and directly above the smaller pan. It is held in place by a snap ring. You have to remove the drive shaft, then find a way to push the cup into the transmission so you can remove the ring and change out the cup. The cup has a considerable amount of pressure behind it from an internal spring. I had to modify a small wood clamp to wedge between the trans and the frame to push it in. When you start looking for the part look specifically for an accumulator cup for a General Motors 4L30E transmission since that's what your trooper has.
