2017 Toyota Highland Hybrid - dash lights going crazy and won't start

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi -
My 2017 Highlander Hybrid won't start or jump.  All the lights on the dash
start going crazy, and the screen cycles between 'put the car in park' and
'hybrid system stopped' etc.  I tried going to accessory mode first, but no
difference.  My sense is that the 12v battery is dying (the car sat for a week
or so, but otherwise has had no problems), but the lights don't seem dim and
a quick jump didn't seem to help (I only tried about 15 min charge).  Any
ideas on what it is?  I'm out of town and asked the local shop, but their
answer was to 'tow it there and run tests until they figure it out.'

Yes. I took a stab and just brought the battery (reg not hybrid) to a battery shop. They sat it on the charger over night and it has been perfect. Not sure why it was low, we hadn’t used the car in just a couple days, and have left it for a few weeks before, but apparently sometimes hybrids drain it quickly if you don’t use them.)

I had this problem last night. We followed the jump-starting instructions in the manual and it started up just fine after that, and it's been fine all day today on various trips.

I had the same problem. But my issue is a bit different. I parked my vehicle in car storage for 3 months for the winter. After 3 months It started fine, then drove for 5 hrs. The next day it wouldn’t start. All the lights, windows, back door and everything in the dash was functioning. I call fro road assistance for boosting. I brought it to dealership and explained what the problem was. The mechanic told me these new vehicles have so many modules that drains the battery overnight and it didn’t charge up during that 5 hour duration. I found it weird. I would think the battery would have had enough to charge all the cells in the battery. I will ask more questions. I’m told these new vehicles are all like that. Well I just spent 52,000 on this new vehicle and I expect no issues till many years to come.
