Truck won't fire.

Asked by Kevin Mar 24, 2019 at 09:10 PM about the 1953 Chevrolet 3100 Step-Side Pick-Up

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 53 Chevy truck I just put a 1973 small block in and it has always run
like a champ.  Occasionally I would have to spray some starting fluid into the
carb to get it going but it has always started and run well.  I was recently
backing it into the driveway and it just died like it ran out of gas and would
not start even after a couple shots of starting fluid.   It turns over fine but acts
like there is no spark.  Any hints?  Thanks.

Does it have spark? Pull the coil wire and hold it 1/2 in. from a metal part of the engine then have someone crank the engine while you watch for spark. If it has HEI pull a plug wire and insert a screwdriver into the boot and then hold the metal part of the screwdriver 1/2 in. from a metal part of the engine block then have someone crank the engine while you check for spark. It sounds as if the carburetor has a problem with the choke and the accelerator pump so it's due for rebuilding. You should also check the timing in case the timing chain jumped. I hope this helps. Take care.
