Car is overheating after driving for about one half hour

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Car is a 1988 2.8 Lt MPFI V6 automatic.  When engine gets up to temp, it
shoves some of the rad antifreeze into the overflow container, this seems
normal to me.  But then the rad gets low in coolant and the "low coolant" light
comes on.  When I check, the rad is low and the overflow container is FULL.
So, what will cause the antifreeze to NOT return to the rad as required?

Radiator cap is the first thing to check or replace. Then restriction in the coolant flow through the radiator. Next is excessive pressure building in the cooling system, possible blown head gaskets or cracked cylinder head.

I'd buy AC DELCO OEM or other quality part , if the temps. aren't soaring or bouncing around it may well be the cap .
