Ford Escort ZX2 1999, Switch that turns on headlights does not work

Asked by herbSeattle Oct 25, 2017 at 12:45 AM about the 1999 Ford Escort 2 Dr ZX2 Cool Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Switch that turns on headlights stopped working. I was switching the
headlights on and then they all went out, even light inside odometer. (I have
to pull the switch back to get the headlights to work, but have to hold it to
keep them on).
I checked the fuses, but they looked ok, both under the steering wheel and
under the hood.  My back lights, brake lights, and turning lights work.  (No
power windows or power locks, not sure if that means it is a "1999 Cool or
Hot version?" Two-door.

If you are having to hold the headlight switch to keep the lights on then I would guess you have a bad headlight switch.

Hi Bob, Thank you for your response. I am taking her in tomorrow to have her looked at. The mechanic over the phone said it would cost $80 labor, plus whatever parts needed. I am guessing a switch would cost about $200, amazon lookup, so maybe, $280 or $350 to fix it? Does that sound reasonable? I am not a mechanic person, so I am not sure about prices or parts. They could tell me that I need "Winter air in my tires" or a "fan belt buckle", costing $200 each, and I just might believe them. :)

Sounds reasonable, a head light switch is $50.00 on Amazon. It could be something else such a a wiring problem. Good luck with it and please let us know what the problem was as it may help someone else.
