Did you find out what was causing the problem? I have a 2017 Civic hatchback and mine just started doing the same thing.
I never did find out what the problem is. It doesn't happen right away so when I took it to the dealer, they stood there locking it and then immediately unlocking it and of course it works... I'm not really sure what to do now but I'm really sick of it
Gallardo_715 answered 7 years ago
if you have your second key inside the vehicle it wont lock or remote start
Gallardo_715 answered 7 years ago
do not have things like your cell phone in front of your keys. that will distract the sensors
My problem seems to be with the car, rather than the key. I have held the key in my hand, away from electronics, phones, and my other key and the keyless entry will not work. It seems like the car side receiver goes to "sleep" after a while. The keyless entry works perfectly if the car has just been locked or unlocked. If I stand next to the car, press lock or unlock on the key, the car sensor wakes up and the keyless entry works perfectly. But if I stand there for 5 minutes then try it again, the car goes to sleep and the keyless entry no longer works. Still trying to find a solution. TMade an appointment and took it to the dealer, but all their diagnostic computers were broken so the techs just looked at it and couldnt figure it out.
my hatch's keyless entry doesn't work too.
Wow same car same issue - I haven't checked with dealer yet but good to know I'm not alone!

Same exact problem, took my Honda Civic 2017 hatchback to the dealer. They said that Honda is aware of the issue and does not have a fix at this time (4-2-17) it's 5/16/17 today and still not fix available. They said to check back later. Going to try disconnecting the battery for about 10 minutes, to reset everything and see if that fixes it.

Same here. Hatch with keyless issue. Please update if you find a solution

I had the same problem. I showed it to one dealer and it worked in front of that dealer. Made me wondering what the issue is. Then I replicated the issue in front of the other dealer by locking it going far away from the car for at least 5 mins. So they diagnosed the issue and seems to be a issue is some part which needs to be replaced. They have ordered the part for me but the wait time is at least 5 weeks. So guys go to the dealer and replicate the issue by locking the car and stay away for 5 min and then come back and try to open without using key, it won't work.

My attempted fix of disconnecting the battery, worked. Fix: Disconnect both battery cables wait 10 minutes then push the engine start button. (this will relieve any power still stored within any capacitors). Reconnect the battery cables, make sure they are tight and the cables don't move. That's it.
I will try the battery fix and still try to show the dealer again at some point. My issue isn't just with the locking anymore. My radio also has a mid of its own. The screen jumps through the pages whenever it wants to. Sometimes when I'm using the maps it goes back to the radio screen on its own... Pain in the a$$ this car has been. Anyone else having these issues as well?
WadesCivic answered 7 years ago
Nicole, I had that issue as well as the locking and the battery fix corrected it. I haven't had any issues for about 3 weeks now.
I have two Hatches and both are having this trouble. Some have said its a faulty Body Control Module but that has already been replaced on one of mine and the issue continues.
I had this issue and "fixed with disconnecting battery. 3 months later it is happening again.
WadesCivic answered 7 years ago
Well Guru97QNC, it hasn't been 3 months for me yet, but I may have found the cause of the issue. It has something to do with connecting an apple device the the USB port. My radio started to freak out again, beeping and you can't select anything. Disconnected to battery and I'm back to normal. I started to connect the phone prior to starting the car. I haven't had any issues since I started doing this. 2 weeks now.
My cars keyless entry just stopped working. Very annoying. Has anyone had any resolutions with the dealer?
Just spent over 3 hours at dealer. Service manager said it is the first he has heard of this problem. They checked out the system, tried to change "settings". Only thing that worked was a hard reset, which is not just disconnecting the battery but resetting using a computer which completely resets all the modules. He said just disconnecting the battery leaves some voltage in the system and not everything gets completely reset. Time will tell if it worked
After taking my car to the dealer they concluded that it was a faulty module that needs to be replaced. I have to take in my car so they can work on replacing it. Has anyone had this done? I'm scared that my car will not be the same after? But they should know what they are doing.
This happened to me tonight! I did my usual routine and opened my trunk to put my stuff in it. Then went to unlock my door with handle and nothing happened. I got out my keys and used fob to unlock and nothing happened. When I went back to the trunk, I noticed the rear yellow lights were on.. and so were the front. The car was not responding to any remote entry or locking. Called Honda and they did not advise me to manually unlock because it would set off alarm and they weren't sure if I could shut it off . So, I had to get it towed ( good thing I have roadside assistance). Droppes the car off at honda service dept and will see what they say tomorrow. This is not acceptable that this is an ongoing issue that they aren't fixing. I predict they will either say tjey don't know what the problem is or that there is no fix yet. Anyone get a fix for this? I had a strange issue with the touchscreen a few months back where it was frozen and the time wasn't working as well. I wonder if it is a slow computer failure. Not happy woth Honda
I have the same problem with the same car! I was wondering if anybody has the beeping going on with the stereo as well?
Guess what just happened to me Same issue 2017 civic EX, only 6months old.. It works if I lock the door and immediately try to open it but walk away and come back and it wouldn't work. Was getting gas today and got paranoid that it would not open. Will take it in to Honda and see what they say.
Hi all! Honda actually is going to be releasing a recall for the lockout issue when opening the trunk. After getting car towed to a Honda dealer, they called the Honda tech line and sure enough they knew about this issue and gave them a fix for it. It needs a new part. If your Honda dealer tells you there is no fix, tell them to call the Honda tech line. I am loving proof that they know of the issue AND have a fix for it. The Honda dealer didn’t know why the recall wasn’t released yet but it will be soon! Hope this helps.
Hello again. Booked my appointment at Honda and got a called from the dealership service manager a few hours before my appointment. He basically described point for point what I was experiencing. He acknowledged that since the summer the dealership has had lots of owners bringing their civic in for the same issue. The dealership has replaced door handles, key fobs, batteries etc and the issue still persists. He says Honda knows there is an issue and is still working on a fix. Also said now that I have "filed a report", I will be called on once Honda finds a permanent fix.
Mmushy- that is bull — from the Honda dealer u got. They have a fix. The tech line had a fix for it. Honda fixed my car according to the tech line and I have not have any problems since. Sounds like they didn’t want to do the work or go the extra mile. I am proof that there ks a fix and it works. Go back to another Honda dealer that will actually go the extra step to call the tech line.
Just bought 2017 civic exl and remote start no longer works. Heated seats quit also. Have appointment next Monday. Let you know what I find out.
My 2017 exl remote start and heated seats quit??? Hope there is a fix

I have same problem w not unlocking after 5 min. They replaced a body module. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Unfortunately the body control module did not end up fixing mine. They still haven’t figured it out.
captaincody answered 6 years ago
So body module didn't fix yours? Did it work for a while then stopped working? After how long?
It only worked a few times. They rebooted it the end of last week and it still doesn’t work properly. I am waiting on their tech people to tell them what to do next.
The door locks on the driver side doors wouldn't unlock/lock, to both the fob and master lock button. Took it to the dealership 4 times! They first replaced the computer and then actually replaced the power latches on both doors. Be persistent!
FYI, March 15/18, I had the same problem with keyless door unlocking, 2017 Civic Couple. Honda replaced my BCM unit, they have now issued a bulletin to dealers about this issue. Brian Cook
I'm having the same issue as of now ...I bought the car in October and it's a 2017 civic ex After 5 mins it doesn't work anymore I'm gonna take it to Honda and see what they say
*DO NOT JUST UNPLUG THE BATTERY* They will replace your Body Control Module if your car is still under warranty (and it should be if it is a 16-17). Apparently, there is a buzz going around that this is an issue with all 16 and 17 EX models within the Honda mechanic system, but they are not releasing anything. I brought my car back to the dealer at least 5 times before they took me seriously because they would test it immediately after locking the car instead of giving it time to hibernate. Finally, I left it overnight at the dealership and showed them in the morning what the issue is, and they are fixing it. PLEASE DON'T USE THE BATTERY UNPLUG HACK! This will reset the system and make the keyless entry work for a few months, but it is NOT a fix all for the issue. I did it and my entry stopped working a few months later. The BCM being faulty could eventually lead to bigger issues, and everyone should have it replaced while you are still under warranty!
this just happened to me 2015 civic
Holy crap! I have the same thing going on. Fortunately I'm still under warranty. I have an appointment on Friday. Glad I looked this up so that, if they tell me they've never heard of this or that they don't know of a fix, I can direct them to the Tech line (or this feed). The key fob issue is a new one for me, but I have had to reset the entertainment center several times because it fails to disconnect my cell phone. Hopefully whatever this is will be resolved by the control module change.

I had almost identical issue described as by GuruDW1DG above - truck opened fine then went to driver door tried to unlock with door handle would not open, got out my keys and tried used to use fob to unlock and nothing happened. Did try to use key and it would not work either went back to the trunk, I noticed the rear yellow lights were on but could not open trunk - (I did not notice on front lights were on or not) I waited a few minutes and kept trying fob and eventually opened my door and car started with no issue - drove home and tried back-up remote it worked right away - will try calling dealer tomorrow.

HI All, I have Bought 2017 Civic LX exactly a Year Ago. Yesterday Night I did My Laundry and Opened the Trunk , and Placed my Laundry. Once i Closed the Trunk, and tried to Open the Driver Seat with My Remote Key, the Car didn't respond. None of the Buttons in the Remote Key Worked. The Lock, Unlock , the Panic Button , the Trunk Button Nothing worked. The Car Stopped Responding. I had a Spare Key , and Tried with That , and also no LUCK. DIDN'T Understand whats going on as it happened for the First Time. Inserted the KEY manually in the Driver Seat , but the Key didn't trunk. So it was not Opening Manually. Today Morning I called the Dealer, and told to Use the Honda Road Side Assistance to tow the Car to the Dealer. The ROADSIDE assistance guy came and Used my Key to Unlock the car , but was not able to do. So he had a Key In his Towing Vehicle he used to manually Open the DRIVER SEAT and towed the car to the Dealer. Once the car was Opened, my Keys started responding . I am waiting for the Dealer to let me know probably by Tomorrow , what was the issue.
I've been having the same issue for the past month as well! 2017 hatchback ex-l. I'm dropping my car off today so hopefully they can replace that part and resolve this issue.
My problem is almost the opposite. I can be driving and suddenly the trunk pops open. It's often open when I come back to the car after parking as well. And overnight the driver side door evidently opened, enabling someone to ransack the car. Either there are large numbers of key fobs using the same signal, enabling random people to unlock the doors, or the locks simply fail at random times. Either way, it is unacceptable. Are there ways to replace the electronic locks with physical ones?

I am having that issues now my car don’t unlock after 5min. I need to manually click unlock on the key dob. Anyone found a fix?

Finally solved it guys. It's the Door actuators. Haven't had the issue in more that 8 months ever since. FYI, maybe we could do a class action lol. Reply on this forum once it gets changed and works so more people can see it.
They replaced my door handles, key fob battery and now they said they going to replace the module... we will see what happens today.
Nick, i have the same issue. Can you tell me how you fixed it?
So it looks like Honda fixed it now ... they replaced the Engine / Power Train Control Module & Unit Assy Body Control Module & reprogrammed my key fobs. So far so good, hopefully it’s not a temporary fix.
I have a 2017 Honda Civic Touring, Similar to what some have described, the keyless entry would not work unless It was unlocked with the key itself and then work for like 2-3 min. When I'd return the keyless would not work also. The Body Control Modular (BCM) was replaced and is now working fine.
I am having Issues I have a message on my dash "keyless access system problem" My car locks and unlocks with key Fob buttons, but hand keyless entry does not work or button to lock on handle does not work help
My remote keyless stopped working. It worked fine yesterday, and this morning it wouldn't unlock my car doors. When I press the unlock button, a red light blinks. I have a 2015 Honda Civic. Just got the car in June 2019.

Had Honda Roadside Assistance start my 2017 Civic which I had purchased new a couple of years ago. While the car was running I pressed the "Power" button on the Touch Screen and held it for 4 seconds. This released the anti-theft system activation. Then was able to turn car off and start it up and Key FOB worked perfectly. Prior to this, I had gotten off work, went to my car and everything was dead. The Key FOB was completely dead - nothing worked. Had wife bring the other Key FOB, didn't work. Changed Key FOB batteries didn't work. Purchased a battery, was going to install, when I started playing with the Touchscreen because it and inside instrumentation wasn't working and noticed a brief screen message, something about resetting the anti-theft system by holding down the power button for 4 seconds. Took a little bit of time but finally figured it was referring the the button on the upper left of the touchscreen. After I did this, all was well and I was a hero to my wife because I was able to get my money back on the battery.
I had the same problem and of course the dealer could not find a problem because it worked for the, then I made a video of it not working, and they fixed it. Not sure what they did,it was covered by warranty. A few other electronic issues also got “fixed” once they fixed the keyless entry.
Have an issue with my 2017 Civic Hatchback- the smart entry isn't working properly. The door handle "smart entry" unlocking will only work for roughly 30 seconds after shutting my car doors. When walking up to my car let's say after leaving work and putting my hand in the door handle the doors do not unlock. But when parking to go into work and I shut my car door lock it and immediately put my hand on the door handle it work. I took my car to the dealer since I have a warranty to cover things like this and they told me that this is how it was designed to work. So the feature I paid for was only designed to work some of the time and it's unpredictable when it will work. Obviously total gaslighting of the problem. The manager kept saying this and there was obviously no way for me to be heard by the staff there. I've called Honda and can't seem to get anyone to admit that this isn't working. Has anyone took this to small claims or had success getting this fixed? Not sure what to do I just want my car fixed.
