Has anyone experienced problems with the "dial shift selector" on a 2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

On a recent test drive, the selector knob would not dial from "Drive" to "Park."
My foot was on the brake, and I tried several times.  My passenger tried - and
was successful on his second try.

You should tell your LR dealer about this.

Thanks, but the sales rep was in the back seat . . . I'm sure he assumed it was "user error."

I have had the same problem with selector knob on my 2017 Discovery turning it from Sport mode to Drive and it won't go any further.

I had an incident happen today with my 2018 Discovery Sport Dynamic edition. I started the vehicle, put my purse on the passenger side floor and went to get my dog. When I put my purse on the floor, it must have grazed the gear knob and it went into reverse without me even turning/touching the knob. The vehicle went into reverse and hit my husbands vehicle. Had my husbands vehicle not been there, I would've been run over!! So now I have 2 damaged vehicles with a few thousands dollars of damage due to this faulty gear knob. I called my friend who has the same vehicle and a similar incident happened to her! Anyone else have an issue like this??

Yes. A very similar frightening incident occurred with our Discovery Sport last year. It was in Park and then unexpectedly shifted into Drive when the driver stepped out momentarily. It had been idling in Park for 2-3 minutes and then suddenly clicked into Drive. I watched it happen. My two toddlers were in the car and fortunately were strapped in their car seats and were unhurt when it crashed into a garage. This has been a frequently reported issue with the 9 speed ZF transmission. We had to sell it back to the dealership. Jaguar/Land Rover is aware of the issue but has been sweeping it under the rug. Sounds like you had a similar incident. Note that your purse couldn’t have sent it into reverse, as you need a foot on the brake in order to shift gears.

I have had issues with the 2019 Land Rover Discovery gear knob. This is a rental car. Engine stops when you stop and then restarts when you take your foot off the break, BUT THE ACCELERATOR doesnt work. I had to turn the car off, then back on and wait for the knob to pop up so I could put it back in drive. PAIN IN THE ASS

Yes 2017 discovery sport just purchased used and researching as I’ve noticed the knob sticking even when brake is fully pressed. Is there a fix for this? I’ll be taking back to carmax to fix hopefully

I experienced the same thing today with my 2015 discovery. Gear won't spin back from drive to park till I stopped the engine, felt a jerk and it popped back up after starting the car. Scary!
