back fire when stepping on gas pedal then car shuts down like its out of gas

it starts up, then once in any other gear it wil shut off sometimes even in park.
But when driving it will be driving just fine then all of a sudden it will back fire
and putter like its running out of gas but will have at least half a tank or more. c
If i step on the gas pedal more it just keeps making same sound but the car
doesnt go any faster is just slowly shuts down. the lights, radio, heat work and u
can turn the key over and u can hear it click to turn over

scan for codes and get the definitions , if you can't connect with the ecm then it may be bad ,what do the plugs look like ? spray carb. cleaner down the throttle , check egr function , could be about anything , start with basics , look for a good motor to chassis ground

Also check the fuel injectors for leakage if the car is fuel injected and have the fuel pump pressure measured and monitored.
