The space you see is the space where the gasket goes. Oftentimes they do not extend all the way to the outside of the pump. If you have a leak you cannot find get a free leak detector rental from the auto parts store. Hook it up to the radiator and use the hand pump inflating the pressure to about 12 pounds. Water will squirt everywhere from the leak. Do not exceed 12 pounds or you may break something that is not broken.
