Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Jeep Liberty 2006 Ltd. Rear brake lights are not working. The third (upper)
brake light is working. I checked the bulbs and fuses and they are ok. All other
lights work. What could be the cause of this problem.

I have the same problem. What was your solution?
Same with me, did you figure it out?
After researching further online some posts suggested it is the multifunction switch on the steering column. Apparently there is a circuit that goes through the turn signals to dim the brake light as the directional is on. Haven't replaced it yet, gonna check with meter to see if that is it first.
Has anyone tried replacing this component to see if it is the solution? Also if anyone could include a picture of the part that would be helpful
Nicholas, I replaced the turn signal switch/multifunction switch. Nothing happens. I still have the third brake light and no brake lights.
I found that the connection between the taillight and the socket are dirty clean them with sandpaper brake lights work fine
I was checking the pins with a multimeter for ground and continuity and found the light started working. I went to the other side and just cleaned the contacts on the plug that that connects to the assembly the holds all three bulbs and bingo it started to work. So the issue is dirty or corroded contacts.
Update... better late than never. I swapped bulbs from back up light sockets to upper tail/brake sockets and replaced the lower backup bulbs on both sides. It worked! None of the bulbs appeared spent, so I have no explanation. All good...just replace bulbs

I have the same exact problem. No brake lights on bottom top light works. I replaced bulbs. nothing... I checked all fuses I can see about brake lights they all say abs something in fuse boke. Nothing clear as to saying brake lights. No success. I'm puzzled. Can it be the brake pedal switch? And how can I test this?
you need the tail light bulb socket holder bracket that hold all three bulbs

I'm having the same problem. I have changed fuses, turning switch, brake light switch and bulbs and still same problem no bottom brake lights but the top one works. Help!
I had the same problem of only the top rear light working. I replaced the switch at the steering column, but it didn't change anything. Finally I just replaced all the bulbs and cleaned the contacts and got all the lights working. I still don't know what the root cause was, but must have been one of the bulbs were bad or contacts shorting out.
I just recently got a 2006 liberty sport. Having the same problem. 3rd light worked but not regular brake lights. I found dirt in the pigtail between the light plug and the harness coming from the body of the jeep. I also found that since the top and bottom lights are the same I swapped out the twisty plug and everything lit up!!!!!! So just an idea to try if you haven't already. Good luck!!!!
I have a 2011 Jeep Liberty with the same issue. I have replaced the bulbs, brake light switch, the panel that the bulbs plug into and the wiring harness for the tow package. Even after all of that the driver side brake light doesn’t work. All other lights work. Any suggestions?
Check to see if plastic is discolored where bulb goes. If so it has gotten hot. Then check contacts in housing where the bulb twist back it. One of mine had melted into the plastic. Scrapped away plastic and bent contact back out. Both lights started working.
