Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Okay I have 05 Jeep Liberty with about 150,000 miles on
it , I know for a fact I need a oil change (since one hasn’t
been done for a little while ) So it could be one reason it
knocking so I’ve read into , I checked all fluids and
everything but oil was a little low so I added some in , still
making a knocking noise it seems to be coming from the
back of the engine , not sure what to look for or where to
go from here just hoping it not nothing major like bushings
or rod . Anyone have any suggestion of what to look for or
try next ? It’s also 3.7l engine if that helps

The symptom you are describing may be caused by an internal problem, piston rod bearing that needs to be replaced. But I am not ruling out some other cause. Take the vehicle to a mechanic for a diagnosis, if it is an internal engine problem you need to have it fixed soon.

If it’s in fact an internal problem , would any lights come on like check engine etc. because the only light I have that turns on and off is my oil light , I bought the car used about a year ago and replace the water pump ,the radiator, break lines and transmission lines . I had previous leaks in these areas so I don’t know if that could of done any damage to the engine , also I know there was a lot of recalls on my specific jeep ( not sure if they’d ever been replaced , would this to take any difference ) their also been some changes in wiring before I bought the car , like my overdrive will turn on when I roll up back window , trying to narrow it down , with out spending a ton of money . At this point feeling like I should just junk it and get a whole new car , any opinions ?

Samantha, the oil light turning on and off may be because of poor oil lubrication, the oil pump is failing. I would look at this issue first and leave the problem with the wires for later. If the knocking sound is coming from inside of the engine, you need to have it checked soon. You have already invested money in the vehicle, with the engine knock you are going to find very few people interested, or that want to give you a very low price. You can try changing the oil/filter, if you have been using 5w-30 then go to 10w-40 and see what happens.

Is the noise coming from under the hood? Or under the car?

I have a knocking in top of my Jeep on top of the engine. I like to know what's the problem. I don't know if it's the rods or I have to get a new engine is a 2002 Jeep Liberty 3.7.
