Revs but does not accelerate

When I push down the gas the engine revs but the vehicle does not accelerate.  Started with only doing it when I was in a hurry but now will do even when I push the gas pedal down slower.

That sounds like a slipping transmission. Check the fluid level but once they slip that bad the trans is usually a goner.
