Question type: Maintenance & Repair
air appears to have enough refrigerant but I have to jump the relay to get
compressor running. it's set at lowest temp and does not get very cold. Is it
the compressor not pumping strong enough. When the relay is in the
compressor kicks in for a second then stops .about five seconds it repeats. it
does not stay running. I suspect the compressor is not pumping at full
capacity .

My system was about .5 lb low on refrigerant. but found that the orifice tube was partially plugged. I'm pretty sure the compressor's age has a lot to do with it. Right now the system is working but I'm guessing about 80% due to weak compressor. The metal shavings on the orifice tube kind of kind of indicates worn parts in the compressor. Thanks tennisshoes for your help.
would a plugged system cause the compressor not to kick on? I can put a jumper on the relay and force the compressor to run. It will cool for a while but then only warm air. Acts like it is low on refridgerant. Had a "mechanic" check it and he said no leaks and the system is full. I'm puzzled now! Same guy put a new orifice tube in. When the vechical is cold I don't need to "jump" the relay. Compressor kicks in and I get cold air. After a few miles the compressor shuts down. Could it be either the low or high pressure switch?
