Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I have a 03 liberty that will blow hot for a few seconds
then blow cold and stays cold.  I can switch the
temputure to cold from hot and it blows hot for a few
seconds then gets cold. Any idea what's going on?

Check your coolant level ASAP. If the proper level of coolant is not present in the system, the heater core will not see full temperature, and air that has contaminated the system will inhibit the flow. Fill and Bleed with your heat on and the vehicle running...and check for leaks (since you lost coolant somewhere)!

Also under the hood there 2 hoses going into your heater core. one goes to and one comes out of core. One going in should be fairly hot one coming out should be warm. If they one coming out is cool, heater core could be blocked.

There is a second flap door behind the first one that controls the heat. If the gear gets stripped the front door works normally but the heat door won't open for heat. Good luck getting the second door open

the problem is that the heater core is plugged unlike older heater cores that have a continuous tube that is coiled up.... your vehicles have a tank and tube flow through design made of plastic and aluminum ...so what happens is that over time the back of the tank and tubes get plugged and slowly get plugged forward to the point its only letting some coolant to flow through and once the fan is turned on it pushes air over the majority of the plugged are which is not getting warm at all ...anther sign of this is heat on pass side only and none on driver side ...you can flush it all day long but will not be enough to clear it...have replaced heater cores in the same customers vehicle more than three times...meaning the same car has had three cores installed for the same issue

Heat works good when driving 55 mph or above 2500 rpm. Sitting still it's cold air no matter if the jeep is heated up or not.

I have a 2009 liberty, with the same issue. Blows heat intermittently, blows cold other times. It blows colder on the driver side to the point of fogging up the windshield. Would the solution be the same as posted above? Or is there a difference between the 2002 and 2009 Liberty in this area? (question was originally asked about an '02 and just want to make sure the answers still apply to a '09)
