What could be wrong with my jeep?

Asked by hsmp Oct 25, 2017 at 07:33 PM about the 1999 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4-Door 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

so my check gages light come on then goes off
then comes on again then goes off again and does
that over and over again so idk why it keeps doing
that. then also when i barely touch the gas petal or
just go it makes this weird super loud clicky noise
and i don’t know what it could be for because i
have nothing coming up saying the engine needs to
be checked or whatever so i have no idea cause my
jeep is basically perfectly fine but idk what those
two things are about.

That's an odd problem. Does the engine run fine as you hit the gas and hear the clicking or does it start to run rough?

"Clicky" could just be lifters which can be grumpy until they're warmed up.. normal and not a disaster... change oil blend according to weather and see if you notice change. Engine light... yeah... annoying... no easy answer but one simple suggestion? Unplug battery, reset, and make sure you gas cap is screwed on and locked before you start. Every time you fuel up, turn engine off and lock cap prior to restarting.. based on... a life with jeeps experience but not an expert... best of luck. (Lifters -no big deal -oil adjustment)
