Jeep Electrical

Asked by nikbagnaschi Feb 23, 2019 at 11:27 AM about the 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4-Door 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Some backround: the jeep almost overheated
as i was driving up a steep grade, i pulled
over and turned it off until it cooled down. 10
mins later i started it up with no issue and
drove another 10 miles, all with the temp
being normal. Pulled up to a stop light and
the engine cut out on its own. Wouldnt restart
even with a jump. Towed it back home and
then i replaced the battery, starter relay first.
Buddy of mine tried to arc the starter and the
engine almost started so the then i replaced
the starter. Still didnt start and didnt even
turn over engine. Fuel pump works and was
able to arc the new starter so i have power.
Then we replaced the ignition coil. Still didnt
start. When i went to start it, security mode
popped on. Disabled that, then when i went
to try and start it, for the first time the check
engine light came on, pulled the codes and it
said there was a pcm error. What is going
on?

May want to try replacing the crank sensor before doing anything to the PCM. PCM is not only an expensive part but requires reprogramming at a qualified shop or dealership. No crank sensor input can cause no bus, no start issues, the overheating may have aggravated the issue.

Still no codes? How are all the dash gauges, working fine? Does any engine die every time? May want to find a shop or dealership that can scan it with engine running to monitor PCM, if it is glitching then you'll obviously need a new one.

I cant even get the engine to start since it died the first time. Ill get out the code reader again. Ill post back in a sec.

I would be pulling and replugging the PCM molex connectors (at least give them a good wiggle). You may have some corrosion in there or cold solder joints on the connector pins.
