Do you have a check engine light on the dash? It's probably an issue with the engine or transmission that's putting the vehicle into limp mode to prevent further damage. Have the codes scanned and that will help narrow down the issue. A lot of times when your engine overheats, it can damage the automatic transmission fluid and cause issues with the transmission. You will want to at least change the transmission fluid.
