When does a fuel pump goes bad

UNFORTUNATELY A FUEL PUMP I ONE OF THOSE PIECES THAT EITHER WORKS OR IT DOES NOT. YOU WILL KNOW IT IS BAD WHEN YOU CAN'T START YOUR CAR THE NEXT MORNING, OR IN MY CASE THE VAN SHUTS DOWN ON YOU GOING ACROSS THE INNERSTATE BRIDGE DURING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC.
Probably one of the most "misdiagnosed" car problems... I have seen a boatload of posts here with the recurring theme " I changed this, that and my fuel pump and it didn't solve my problem" Of course fuel pumps fail however many (not all) will give a clue before they go bad. You may feel a lack of acceleration or the engine may "Top out" when driving. It may take longer for your car to start due to the check valve failing to retain fuel and the pump has to refill the lines ,,, lot of clues but if you don't know what they mean then the pump will finally fail
