My 1996 Jeep Cherokee Country is very difficult to start when cold

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Country 4wd.  It is very difficult to start when cold.  A mechanic just checked it and said the fuel pressure is good but I am not getting any signal or power to the injectors when I am experiencing this problem.  He turned off the a/c and the engine started up an ran.  I normally have problems the first five minutes each morning.  When it initially starts it will not idle and stalls.  After about five minutes of driving or giving it gas to idle it will level out and run fine for the rest of the day.  I can leave it off for four or five hours and it will start fine.  The next morning the problem reoccurs.  The vehicle has 200,000 miles. The pistons and rings were replaced at around 140,000 miles.  The heads were also rebuilt.  It is a 4.0 L engine.  It has a new water pump, new upstream and downstream emissions sensors and the transmission was recently rebuilt.

Clean or replace ( IAC ) Idle Air Control valve or Mass Air Flow sensor depending on which one your vehicle has. Also add some fuel injector cleaner to gas tank.
