95 Jeep Cherokee

Asked by TheOptimizer Dec 21, 2016 at 12:35 PM about the 1995 Jeep Cherokee SE 4-Door RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

ac was working fine. needed to route some radio
wire so i unscrewed the ac controller in the dash.
there wasn't enough slack in the wires so i
disconnected 4 wires behind the fan speed control
and a big black connector from the middle top of
the controller. after reconnecting everything the ac
only blows out the defrost vent. i know this is
symptomatic of a vacuum problem but i don't see
how what i did could cause a vacuum problem
when everything was working before. thanks for
any help.

Did you mix up the wires or accidentally pull something loose when you were working in the dash?

not that i can see. the fan speed wire were labeled and that works properly. i don't know what that black connector does, but it only goes on one way. i don't know if there's a vacuum connection on the control unit.

*EDIT* the big black connector i unhooked was the top right, not the top middle. still, it only goes back on one way.

got it. for some reason the direction changed to the defrost vent when i unhooked it. when it got reconnected i never turned the engine on while checking it. no engine, no vacuum. started working as soon as the started the engine.
