ooooof, the motor has a jumped timing chain....pull the timing cover and inspect the timing marks....~ https://www.google.com/#q=1995+jeep+cherokee+4.0+timing+chain

would that allow the motor to run fine in reverse? because it only stalls and dies in drive.

have someone take the timing cover off and check the timing marks~

okay....the motor don't run in reverse...counterclockwise only...all components...the transmission has a reverse...if you need it~

"run fine?" like the Smokesignals chevy did? think you mean will stay running...is an anomaly on account the engine timing seems to be off...use a compression tester to check each cylinder~
Check your ignition switch brain box under the dash on drivers side connected to steering column Auto Zone can check it out to see if it's bad or not
