Jeeps are great vehicles. Not the greatest on gas but what do you expect for all the capability you are getting. AS with any car if it has been maintained well it should be ok. Some of my family members have had these and I know the engines are great. If anything I would be more worried about the condition on the trans.
Auto tranny could be a problem. Both the 4cyl and the 6cyl engines are bulletproof. Make sure to check compression and listen for any unnatural noises coming from the engine. There will probably be an oil leak from the rear main seal that you might have to replace. Go ahead and have the oil pump replaced at the same time. I personally would not buy a 2wd, but they are good cars. Don't pay over $1800 for that old and that many miles though.
The auto tranny is the one you want, the AW4 is a great tranny and damn near indestructible. 200K on one is high, but the 4L is damn near anvil like reliable. If youre handy with mechanics, youll love to work on it, parts are cheap and readily available. Also, to make it into a proper Jeep, a 4x4 swap is dead easy :D
