It sounds like you have a manual transmission in your Nissan. I suspect that your vehicle has an interlock that prevents the starter from actuating unless your transmission is in "Neutral". When the transmission was replaced the technician probably did not adjust the interlock switch properly. If you have an automatic transmission, then the gear selector needs to be in either, "Neutral" or "Park". You wiggling the gear selector causes the contacts in the switch to engage, allowing the starter to turn over the engine. Either way, return it to the shop that did the work so that they can adjust the interlock switch. It won't take them very long.
