Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just purchased a 2005 Amanti and notice a distinct "whirring" noise when accelerating 1st thru 4th gears.  When 5th gear is reached the noise is gone and doesn't recur until I slow down again.  Any ideas as to the cause and does it indicate something serious?

Check/replace the fluid. if the synchros were bad your gears would grind when you engaged them.

I've seen a few torque converters start to seperate cause a similar noise only under acceleration that usually would go away or lessen after releasing the accelerator pedal or on coast down.
