should the water pump be replaced when doing timing belt

Many vehicle manufacturers state that the water pump should be replaced at the same time as the timing belt. This is primarily due to the stresses put on the drive sprocket bearings by a tensioned belt, after time the belt stretches out slightly (main reason for renewal) and the tension goes, the bearings wear accordingly. When a new belt is fitted it is then tensioned and the stresses are re-applied to the water pump bearings and so could cause failure. Also on some cars the impeller is made from plastic and does begin to 'slip' on the driven shaft of the pump, this was especially found with some Volkswagen motors. Anyhow it is a good idea to change the pump at the same time as the belt rather than have to pay for the same job twice!!

I agree with Paul. The price for labor to do a timing belt, is about the same as the water pump. The timing belt needs to be removed to change the water pump. It's your call, but why pay the labor cost twice? It's very common for a mechanic to suggest this, and it will save you money in the long run. Some parts suppliers sell complete timing kits that include the water pump.

Thanks car is at dealer, All of there parts are al a cart they want as much for the water pump 150 as I found for the whole timing belt kit with water pump. There first price to do job was 450. Then they asked me if I wanted pump done I said I thought that this was changed as 1. Not for that price add 150 then 20 a piece for 2 belts to alt and a/c
