With my '88 Bronco II, I had to stop & lock the hubs for both 4-wheel Hi & 4-wheel Low, then shift into 4-wheel Hi or Lo. However, for my wife's 2004 Kia Sorento, we just turn the dial as FordNut showed above. We can shift it into 4x4 while driving, but I've not tried going from 4x2 into 4x4-Lo while moving. 4x2 into 4x4-Hi hasn't been an issue. However, that being said, you may want to shift into 4x4 at least once a year so that the parts are routinely engaged; for my wife's Sorento, it died on her a couple years ago when she shifted it into 4-Hi after not having gone into 4x4 for quite some time (years). Now, that could just have been her car or there may have been a 4x4 Lube option that I needed to ask for when getting the oil changed, but a lesson learned on our part --- local mechanic & brother-in-law fixed it for parts & beer.
