99 ford Taurus

My engine doesnt start my battery works and all
the power to car does when I turn ignition the
windshield wipers turn on and they are definitely
off the positive wire to the battery gets real hot
and starts to smoke when you go to start the
engine it just makes a single clunky click sound  
what is wrong

Can you turn the crankshaft by hand? The engine isn't seized? I'd probably take the starter motor off, lay it on the ground, hook up jumper cables properly from battery to starter motor, at the least, it should kick out the drive gear and spin, If it won't even do that, something wrong with starter. You want to do voltage drop test on cables and check amp draw during cranking?
